Curug Lawe – A Hidden Gem and a Journey of Friendship

On the western slope of Mount Ungaran, nestled in the lush greenery of Central Java, lies a hidden natural wonder called Curug Lawe. Located in Kalisidi Village, West Ungaran District, Semarang Regency, this beautiful waterfall may not be as widely known as other tourist destinations in Semarang, but its charm is undeniable—especially for those seeking peace, adventure, and a breath of fresh air.

I had the chance to visit Curug Lawe with four of my closest friends, right after we finished our exhausting final exams. The pressure of university life, assignments, and sleepless nights had left us mentally drained. So, we decided to escape the routine and go on a little healing trip—just the five of us, in search of tranquility and fun.

The adventure started from the entrance to the Promasan tourism area, where the real journey began. We had to hike about 1.5 kilometers, trekking through narrow forest paths, crossing bamboo bridges, and walking under the shade of tall pine trees. The cool mountain breeze and the natural sounds of birds and running water made the hike incredibly refreshing. It wasn’t just the nature that warmed our hearts, but also the people. Along the way, we met many fellow hikers—strangers who greeted us with smiles, shared jokes, and encouraged each other to keep going. That friendly atmosphere gave us the motivation we needed to reach the waterfall.

The name "Lawe" comes from the Javanese word meaning “white thread”, a fitting name for the waterfall whose thin streams look like soft strands of thread falling gracefully from a 30-meter-high cliff. When we finally arrived, we were stunned by the view. The waterfall flowed gently, surrounded by mossy rocks and thick, green cliffs. The air was fresh, the water clear and cold, and for a moment, we forgot all our stress. We laughed, took photos, and simply soaked in the beauty around us.

However, not long after we arrived, the weather began to change. Dark clouds slowly rolled in, and the atmosphere became slightly gloomy. A local officer who was monitoring the area kindly approached us and advised us to leave the site immediately. Landslides were a serious risk in that area during unstable weather, and for safety reasons, visitors were asked not to stay too long when it started to look like rain.

Although our time at Curug Lawe was cut short, the experience stayed with us. It wasn’t just about seeing a waterfall. It was about the journey—the small talks during the hike, the sweat, the laughter, the kindness of strangers, and the silent comfort of being surrounded by nature. It was a moment of calm after the chaos, and a reminder of how healing nature can be.

For anyone in Semarang or nearby areas, Curug Lawe is more than a destination—it’s a peaceful escape from city life, a place where you can breathe deeply, reset your mind, and reconnect with yourself and those around you.
